Jhené Aiko - Westside Whimsy

Westside Whimsy feels like Jhené Aiko opening the windows and letting Los Angeles into the music. After a six-year gap since Chilombo, Aiko returns with a 20-song, nearly hour-long project that sounds less interested in proving anything than simply living inside her own world.

What we love most is how effortlessly the album balances intimacy and atmosphere. “Break” turns heartbreak into something almost weightless, while “Don’t Be That Guy” finds Aiko establishing boundaries without losing her softness. Then she can completely switch temperatures on “Beach Boy” and “So Good,” the latter featuring Kendrick Lamar. The Ab-Soul, Tyga, Larry June, and OHMA appearances help make the album feel distinctly West Coast without turning it into a regional showcase.

The sequencing, recurring textures, and understated performances make Westside Whimsy feel like a place rather than merely a collection of songs.

Twenty songs is a commitment, and a tighter edit could have made the strongest emotional moments hit even harder.
